The skull sectioned was among drawings sold by Melziās heirs to Pompeo Leoni. ![]() On his death in 1519, he left his vast archive of papers to his assistent, Francesco Melzi. That year, for the first time, he had acquired a human skull. The skull sectioned is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and, dating from 1489, one of his earliest human anatomical studies.
